About Apples to Apples

This summer I’m spending 10 weeks in China comparing the experiences of apple farmers in Shandong and Shaanxi provinces. I’m working on the project with two other UC Davis students (also in the International Agricultural Development program). As we travel to apple orchards and interview farmers, I’ll share some of our research process, and general shenanigans in China.

  1. Very interesting! In the header photo, are the bags to isolate and identify cross-pollinations, or to protect from insects, or something else?

    • Good question! The bags are placed on the trees after the fruits have already begun to form, so as far as I know cross-pollination isn’t a concern. They do serve a dual purpose of protecting against insects (and pesticides) and giving the apples a pretty pink hue. :)
